Cycle of Pain
Cycle of Pain
Reform Records
By Jason
Black Label Society bassist John
"J.D" Deservio has extended the
BLS family tree with his brain-
child, Cycle of Pain. Twenty
five years in the making gives us
this hard hitting, self titled debut
CD from JD and his longtime
Jersey friends. Though main-
ly rooted in hard rock, C.O.P.
adds flavors of funk, jazz, blues,
soul and even a dash of hip
hop making for a well round-
ed, diverse recording that will
appeal to metal fans and rock
fans alike. The opening track,
"5", is a jazzy/rock track show-
ing off vocalist Gregg Locascio's
bluesy, Chris Cornell sounding
howls. It is a truly infectious,
hook laden opener of a song.
On the second track "Dead
Man Walking", the intro is a
dead ringer for "Back in Black"
going into BLS' "Funeral Bell".
Another nod to Zakk Wylde in
which he plays lead guitar and
can be heard on "I See Heav-
en", sounding like the Book of
Shadows era Zakk. Many of
these songs would sit well in
radio format much better than
most of the generic songs being
played daily. Let's just hope someone will take notice of
this first of-
fering of well crafted songs from JD and company. Rounding
out the Cycle of Pain CD are guest appearances by: Brian Tichy
(Billy Idol), Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory), Clip Payne (P-Funk),
Hugo Ferreira (Tantric) and a host of others. There is plenty to
gain from a debut like this without the pain.
