fries always had some kind of undefinable
aftertaste to them. Heidi and I have nar-
rowed it down to either paprika, or (con-
sidering they're cooked on the same grill as
everything else) the flavor of a thousand
meals before us. Flo's potatoes were awe-
some - crispy on the outside with a lot of
flavor, and no funky aftertaste (I'm a bit of
a spud snob).
At the end of the meal, the place was start-
ing to get packed from the church crowd,
hunters, and local families looking for a
hearty meal on the cheap. We waited for
the check, but it never came. We went up
to the register and the women asked what
table we had sat at. I pointed, and she
found our check in a stack of hand written
receipts in a millisecond.
Two large breakfasts, an orange juice and
umpteen refills on the mud, with tax, all
for only $15.20. We didn't get to look at
the check to see if we were charged a one
- time dime for the coffee, or if it was a
pocketful of change. We didn't care, we
were just curious. By the time we had
paid, and got some singles for the tip, an-
other couple had sat in our booth. Heidi
has bigger balls than me, said `the hell with
it', and tossed a bunch of singles on the
table right in between them. True
to form, the waitress whizzes by
and grabbed the cash before it hit
the table.
On our way home we slowed
down to take a photo of Ed Gein's
vacation home, and there was
a large, fresh carcass of road kill
on the side of the road near the
house. The strange thing was, and
this is no lie, there was no head.
It's disgusting but true. Looks like
someone was able to have an all
you can eat road-kill buffet that
morning after all.
Service: (4 out of 5) We didn't have the same waitress
twice, but we didn't go more than 5 minutes without
being checked on.
Value: (5 out of 5) $15.20 for all that food? It
beats the dollar menu at any fast food joint.
Atmosphere: (3 out of 5) We were really hoping it was go-
ing to be more of a retro diner theme, but it ended up being
more of a generic family restaurant.
Coffee: (5 out of 5) They say "you get what you pay
for", but the coffee
was definitely better
than the 10¢ we were
charged.
