October 8th was a sunny but cool, brisk Thursday
afternoon. However, that briskness would soon be
overcome by the heavy sounds of metal emanating
from the Fort Drum "Polar Bear" Motor pool building
in Watertown, NY. Yes it was an invasion of sorts,
Crows Cage, Dropclutch, and Bonejar, all gave their
time and energy to entertain the US Army's 2nd Bri-
gade Combat Team before their upcoming deploy-
ment. All three bands played this show for free, hop-
ing to help do their part to give a little bit back to
these soldiers who are willing to give everything for
our Country. They put on a high-energy, head-bang-
ing show that kept the soldiers
moshing, singing and jumping
around.
I had the privilege of accom-
panying Crows Cage on this
day. We were all taken care
of very well by the Fort Drum
MWR unit (Morale, Welfare
and Recreation) who provided
the bands and the band sup-
port with food and drink for
the day. Each band member
received a Fort Drum 10th
Mountain Division hat and
each band received a certificate
and a medal called the "10th
Mountain Division Coin for Ex-
cellence" presented by Com-
mand Sergeant Major Jones.
This was certainly a very gener-
ous and prestigious award.
The show was the idea of Cheryl Hasson
whose husband is in the Army's 2nd Brigade.
She planted the seed with the bands, while
Ozzy from Bonejar worked closely with
Fort Drum's MWR unit, and Lt. Col Richard
Greene to bring this show to life. It appears
that Lt. Col Greene himself is quite the fan of
rock music, getting up on stage to workup
the crowd in between each band and again
with Bonejar to help them with a song...
very cool! I was honored to meet him and
he told me we need to do this again when
they return next spring or early summer. But
this next time will be bigger! Till then, we
look forward to the safe return of each and
every soldier.
