little more Indie rock, a little more chill, a little
more laid back. It sounded cooler when you
were stoned. We played a show with 99 Special.
And it was like probably like our 2
nd
or 3
rd
show.
We were having a lot of turmoil. The turmoil
that you have when you are young and filled with
angst and you're drunk as hell all of the time. And
you're drinking lots of fucking Mountain Dew,
and doing lots of trucker speed that you get at the
gas station. So we went to the show, we played
the show, and we played 3 songs and broke up
on stage. The drummer Fred Cousineau and Sean
Trinkhaus who was our guitar player and singer at
the time clashed right on stage. They were fight-
ing on stage and the scene was the whole stage
was covered with grape jelly and those popcorn
things that you use to mail shit. I was wearing
Pajamas. I just gave up after 3 songs. It was like
the worst show I have ever played in my life. We
threw our equipment at each other, I left, I just
bailed. I didn't even care if someone stole my
equipment. I was like fuck it, I don't care. I'm out
of here, I'm going, I'm gone.
After that, apparently Sean, the singer, and Fred,
the drummer, got in a fight on stage. It lasted
about 5 minutes. It was a 5 minute show. There
were probably about 3 people there because ev-
eryone left after 99 Special.
Bill Patton. In 1989, we spent a lot of time
hanging out at The Lost Horizon. My wife ap-
parently worked there at the time but I didn't
know that. I had never met her. We had seen
each other a few times and said hi and what not.
The night we actually met my buddy and I were
hanging out on a Tuesday night. I said to him the
Elk Hill is playing at The Lost Horizon. I really
don't want to see them. Do you want to go hang
out in the parking lot and meet the drunk chicks
coming out? So we went and parked and went
and got cigarettes over at the Mobile station that
used to be across the street there. We are walking
across the parking lot and she comes out cause she
didn't care for Elk Hill much. Her and her friend
had gotten drunk on tequila behind the bar, and
she is pulling out in her car from behind the bar.
She rolled her window down and said, "Hey, I
know you!" And I said, "Hey, I know you!" My
buddy looks at his wife and says 30 seconds, not
bad. We stayed out there until about 3 or 4 in the
morning talking and hanging out. Pretty much
been together since.
The Ben Wah Boys. That was the sound crew
from the Lost Horizon. Jeff Mann, and Scott Ster-
ling, and Chris Paisley. They had a house band
more or less that did mostly covers, I remember
they did "We Might as Well Eat Worms," the old
girl scout song. "Nobody likes me everybody
hates me, I guess I will go eat worms." And they
did a rock and roll version of that song, which I
think hooked me on the band more than any-
thing. The Ben Wah Boys were from Tacoma,
Washington... ot really, but that is what it always
said in the paper. "The Ben Wah Boys from Taco-
ma, Washington." And occasionally, there were
people in town from Tacoma, Washington and
they would see that in the paper and come to
see if they know who they were. They actually
